Thinking about upgrading your pool pump? Here’s my take on it
As the owner of Best Price Pool Equipment, I’ve spent years helping Perth families choose the right pool equipment. One of the most common questions I get is about pool pumps – specifically, whether it’s worth upgrading to a variable-speed pump or sticking with a single-speed model.
Both have their pros and cons, but the right choice depends on your budget, how you use your pool, and what matters most to you—whether that’s saving on power bills, keeping the noise down, or just keeping things simple.
Here’s what I’ve learned from helping countless customers make this decision.
Why energy efficiency matters more than you might think
When it comes to running costs, there’s a big difference between single-speed and variable-speed pumps. A single-speed pump runs at full power all the time, which keeps your pool water clean but burns through electricity. On average, you’re looking at about $1,000 per year just to keep it running.
A variable-speed pump, on the other hand, is much more efficient. It adjusts its speed based on what your pool actually needs, using less power when it can. This means you can run it for longer without racking up a huge electricity bill. In fact, most variable-speed pumps cost around $280 per year to run.
I often tell customers that while variable-speed pumps cost more upfront, they pay for themselves over time. In five years, you could save around $3,600 on running costs alone. That’s enough to cover the cost of the pump and then some.
Why noise levels matter
One thing many people don’t consider until it’s too late is noise. Single-speed pumps run at a constant, high speed, which means they can be quite loud. If your pool is close to your entertaining area, your bedroom window, or your neighbour’s fence, that steady hum can get annoying.
Variable-speed pumps are much quieter because they don’t always run at full power. Most of my customers are surprised at just how whisper-quiet they are. If peace and quiet are important to you, or if you like relaxing by the pool without the background noise, a variable-speed pump is the better choice.
Smart features and convenience
This is one of my favourite things about the newer variable-speed models. The P320, for example, has Bluetooth connectivity, which means you can control it from your phone. This might sound like a gimmick, but it’s actually super handy.
Being able to adjust the settings without going outside is a game-changer, especially in winter when it’s cold and raining. If you’re busy or just want the convenience of managing your pool settings remotely, this feature alone can be worth the upgrade.
Durability and long-term value
I always encourage my customers to think long-term when buying pool equipment. A pool pump isn’t just about the upfront cost; it’s about how long it will last and how much it will cost you to run.
Single-speed pumps usually come with a two-year warranty, while most variable-speed pumps, including the P320, come with a three-year warranty. This gives you an extra year of peace of mind, which can be worth a lot if something goes wrong.
My honest recommendation
If you’re looking for the cheapest upfront option and don’t mind higher running costs, then a single-speed pump is a straightforward choice. They do the job, they’re pool pumps with no frills attached.
But if you want to save on your electricity bill, reduce noise, and enjoy smart features like Bluetooth control, a variable-speed pump is the better investment. It’s more efficient, more convenient, and more reliable in the long run.
I’ve encouraged family members to switch to energy-efficient pumps at home, and they haven’t looked back.
