If you’ve needed to replace a salt cell or salt chlorinator recently, you’ve probably noticed the price has gone up. This is happening across the pool industry, not just with one brand or supplier and here in Perth, we’re seeing it directly through our own suppliers. The main reason is the rising cost of the materials used to make them.
Rare metals are a big part of the reason
Inside every salt cell are titanium plates coated with special metals that help turn salt into chlorine. One of the main metals used is ruthenium, which helps the cell produce chlorine efficiently and keep your pool water clean.
The problem is that ruthenium has become much more expensive. In recent years, its price has risen sharply because supply is limited and demand has increased from other industries, including AI and data storage.
Another metal used in the coating is iridium, and that has also gone up in price. When the cost of these key materials increases, the cost of making salt cells goes up too.
Other manufacturing costs have also increased
It is not just the rare metals. Manufacturers are also dealing with higher costs for:
- Titanium
- Plastic parts and housing
- Freight and transport
- Labour
What this means for pool owners
Because of these rising costs, replacement salt cells and chlorinators are now more expensive than they used to be. In many cases, genuine replacement cells are now reaching $1000 or more. This is becoming the new normal across the market.
Why cheaper is not always better
When prices rise, it is natural to look for the lowest-cost option. But with salt cells, quality matters. A cheaper cell may not last as long or perform as well. That can mean more problems, lower chlorine output and another replacement sooner than expected. Getting the right cell for your system is usually the better long-term decision.
