Best Price Pool Equipment tests pool water for free at our Claremont store, 7 days a week. Bring in a sample and we will test it, explain your results and help you find what you need to bring your water back in balance.
Why test your pool water before you buy chemicals?
Add the wrong chemical, or the right one in the wrong amount, and the problem takes longer to fix and costs more. An accurate test removes the guesswork, so you can fix the issue simply and correctly the first time.
We test with a spin disc system in store for accurate, consistent readings. Your printout lists each result and the amount of each product to add for your pool size, so you can go home and treat the pool with confidence.
What does a pool water test check?
Each reading tells you something different about your pool. Here is what we look at and why it matters.
pH
Measures how acidic or alkaline your water is. Healthy pool water sits between 7.2 and 7.6. When pH drifts high, chlorine works less effectively and scale can form. When it drops low, the water can irritate eyes and skin and wear on equipment.
Total alkalinity
Acts as a buffer that keeps your pH steady. The target range is 80 to 120 ppm. If alkalinity is off, your pH will keep moving no matter how often you correct it.
Chlorine and bromine
The sanitisers that kill algae and bacteria. Low chlorine is one of the most common reasons a Perth pool turns green.
Stabiliser
Protects chlorine from breaking down in sunlight. Under the strong WA sun, low stabiliser means chlorine disappears quickly.
Calcium hardness
Too little calcium and the water can draw it from your pool surfaces. Too much and you can get scale and cloudy water.
Salt
For salt chlorinator pools, the salt level needs to suit your chlorinator so it can make enough chlorine.
Your printout shows each reading against its target range, so you can see what is out and what to do about it.
How do I take a pool water sample?
A good sample gives an accurate result. Follow these steps before you head to the shop.
Use a clean bottle
Rinse it with pool water first, and avoid bottles that have held detergent or juice.
Sample from elbow depth
Take the water from below the surface, away from the skimmer box and the return jets.
Bring it in the same day
Keep the bottle out of a hot car so the reading stays accurate.
Know your pool
Tell us roughly how many litres your pool holds, whether it is salt or chlorine, and anything you have added recently.

How often should you test your pool water?
Test your water regularly through the warmer months, when heat, sun and more swimmers use up chlorine faster. Bring a sample in after heavy rain, after a pool party, or any time the water looks cloudy or green.
Between visits, test strips or a home kit let you keep an eye on pH and chlorine. When the readings look off, an in-store test shows you the full picture.
I have a green pool, what do I do?
Most green pools are caused by green algae growing in the water. It happens more in warm weather and Perth summers bring plenty of hot days. Algae usually takes hold for two reasons: the chlorine level is low or the water is out of balance. Equipment can also be the cause, such as a salt chlorinator with a fault or a filter that is not filtering well.
Four steps to get your pool blue again
Balance the pH and shock the pool
Bring the pH into the 7.2 to 7.6 range, then shock the pool with a chlorine based pool shock to kill the algae. Some algae also needs an algaecide, so ask us in store if you’re not sure.
Check your filtration
If you have a cartridge filter, clean the cartridge thoroughly. If you have a sand or glass media filter, run a backwash.
Brush, vacuum and clean the baskets
Brush the walls and floor to loosen the algae. If you have a sand or glass media filter, set it to “waste” and vacuum. Vacuuming to waste sends the dead algae out of the pool instead of back through the filter. If you have a cartridge filter, vacuum as normal and rinse the cartridge afterwards. Then empty and clean the skimmer basket and the pump basket.
Run the pump for 24 hours
Keep the water moving through the filter while the treatment works.
For a fast clean up, correct the pH, shock the pool and add an algaecide. The next day, use a clarifier to clear the water. A flocculant can help with stubborn cases, but ask us in store first so we can check if it suits your pool.

A fresh sample in a clean bottle, taken from elbow depth. If you know your pool size in litres and whether it is salt or chlorine, bring that too.
Cloudy water usually points to unbalanced water, low chlorine or a filter that needs cleaning. A water test shows which one, so you can fix the cause and skip the guesswork.
Strong sun, low stabiliser, hot weather and heavy pool use all use up chlorine faster. Algae starting to grow will also burn through it. A test pinpoints the cause.
